The reigning champ of multiplayer Half-Life mods returns. Does it stack up?
Review: terror lies in wait in Slums 2 Extended
What are they up to down in the Slums? Scary stuff, that’s what. Matthew Lee fires up this horror-themed Half-Life 2 single player map pack for some bloodsoaked urban decay.
Beta impressions: Star Wars Conquest
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… someone looked at Mount & Blade and thought ‘Needs more lightsabers’.

My mod is falling to pieces: Still Decay
Posted on July 27th, 2010 No comments
Well, I sourced a copy of Doom 3 from a generous friend whose PC is so ancient it couldn’t possibly run it, and I’ve been scouring ModDB for anyone still using iD’s Tech 4 who seems to be making something interesting. And here’s someone! Still Decay is a one-man effort from modder SpiritusSanctus, adapted from an old entry he submitted to a Doom 3 competition a few years back. It’s an ambitious-looking project with the player climbing a giant, crumbling tower, one of the last remaining landmarks in a fallen gothic-industrial fantasy landscape.

Judged: Firearms: Source
Posted on July 26th, 2010 9 commentsI’ll admit that I was a little apprehensive about trying this out. The words “it looks like Counter-Strike!” kept flashing through my mind while I was downloading it. I was never really a fan of those Calls of Modern Duty games, so I figured that if I set my standards low enough no matter what happens I would be pleasantly surprised at the results. Oddly enough, Firearms: Source manages to not only meet my low expectations, but surpass them by far. Beneath the tried and true modern warfare exterior lays a polished and well-executed shooter.

Hello: Betrayal of Jarvall
Posted on July 25th, 2010 1 commentWell now here’s an interesting surprise. Modder MadMaximus (and his brother) is creating a mod… of some sort for the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. I don’t know much else other than that, except for the fact that it’ll be released in episodic form, which lends me to believe that it’s going to be a total conversion instead of an add-on like most Oblivion mods are. The reason I’m posting about this mod, is that all of the screenshots are in-game screenshots, and that it’s supposed to come out in a couple of months… maybe. I can hear my PC crying, since it struggles to run Oblivion as it is. But when and if the mod actually manages to see the light of day, it should provide some terrain that isn’t actually boring (unlike vanilla Oblivion’s terrain). Read On!

Pew pew: Firearms: Source releases
Posted on July 24th, 2010 5 commentsIt was just released… maybe an hour ago? I don’t know, but you can download it for yourself after the click from their website, as the client isn’t up on the ModDB page. They’ve got one of those neato customized pages like Overwatch had. Wait a second, why are you still reading this? Are you waiting for the download to finish? Anyway, for those of you who aren’t familiar with the Firearms mods (or its turbulent history) here’s the lowdown: it’s Counter-strike with that pesky thing developers tend to call realism. True to its name, Firearms is all about the guns. There’s about thirty-one, or thirty-three if you’re going by the trailer, of them. Read On!

Not quite there yet: a quick look at Perfection
Posted on July 23rd, 2010 No comments
And after I was very rude about the number of mods there are featuring psychotic assassins set loose in a world gone mad only two posts ago, here’s Perfection, which features a… mentally disturbed hitman roaming free in London town (which is fairly mad at the best of times). God, I’m a hypocrite. Before I leap off the nearest tall building in shame, let me take the time to explain this is a mod from developers N104, a group of students at Staffordshire university, who’ve decided to expand what was originally a piece of coursework into a full-blown project. Scouting locations, spying on your targets from afar, figuring out the best way to make the kill, trying to ignore the voices in your head; it’s all here. Well, perhaps not that last bit.
