Mod Our Comments: Underappreciated?

Welcome to Mod Our Comments!  No idea what this is meant to be?  Well good, nor do I.  In this newest attempt at a weekly, regular column/idea/thing, we’re going to be asking you, our ever-so-precious readers, your incredible, sexy, ever-so-justified opinions, and hopefully it’ll degenerate into some sort of debate/flame war/internet trolling session.

The topic for this week?  Just to be incredibly original and innovative, we’re going for the oft-used:What’s the most underappreciated mod out there?  We’re curious, so tell us.  I’m pining for Multi-Theft-Auto.  Or possibly The Specialists.

PS: If you can think of a cunning name for this column-thing, then tell us that as well. I is not clever enough for a decent pun.

Well, there was this “art” mod called Jeux d’ Ombres for Far Cry I caught at RPS, but apparently I’m one of the few who liked it…

    Everything made for Thief 2.

  4. There were mods for Thief 2?

ohh, mention of the specialists. I think the problem was that it came along a teeny bit too late and that the time between updates was pretty vast. There was a period after the release of 2.1 where nothing at happened for about 9 months because there was no-one to work on the code.

Anyways, there was tons of stuff in the Half Life days that just didn’t get the attention that they deserved, partially because there was just so much competition and I think partly because of the hulking CS shaped behemoth that gobbled up potential players. There were plenty of slightly broken, but quite promising games – Front Line Force, The Opera, Hostile Intent and the like. Ohh, there was a Goldeneye mod that was lightweight but fun, Science & Industry was good as well, but I never played enough.

There was just so much variety back then.

  6. Oh, and The Ship. How could I forget :(

    The Wastes, HL1.

Fallout, Mad Max and a few other classics mangled together into an absolutely beautiful, smooth, subtle deathmatch. Brutal melee, spraying blood and the best use of sound I’ve ever seen in an FPS game – a 1v1 deathmatch in The Wastes remains the best duelling experience I’ve ever had, thanks to a mixture of excellent weapons, fast movement and great stealth/audio as you crunch through gravel and creak along floorboards.

It never hit the bigtime, never had much attention. I keep a backed up copy and hope to preserve it for future generations.

Think of it like the PC’s GoldenEye.

And it had throwing spears with great physics. And fantastic bullet penetration programming, a vast amount of combat involved diving from cover to cover while a tommygun or a pair of tarnished, chipped up black desert eagles ripped through whatever you were behind half a second before. And fantastic map design, large, complex, ruined urban environments.

God damn, I need to reinstall it and write a feature on it oneday.

I will forever mourn the missed opportunity of a Specialists: Source mod.

  9. StoneCrow says:

(never in the best HL1 mods lists)
    Homeworld Universe
The realism mod for GTA IV
(this fixed the whole game for me)
    FINALLY!
    Spring:1944
(never heard of it? weel its one of the best rts i have EVER played)

bit long, but i couldnt miss out these gems.
