Welcome back to another edition of Mod Our Comments! For those of you who missed out on last episode of our mad epopee to comment heaven, Mod Our Comments is our not-at-all-regular feature where we ask you, our ever dwindling but ever so awesome readerbase, what you think.
So, what is it this week? This week, we want to know what games you really, really wish had more mods – either because there was never an SDK, or because nobody realised how awesome the game was, or for any number of depressing reasons. So, tell us! Tell us of the opportunities lost, the mods left unfinished, and the hopes dashed against the harsh rocks of the internet waves. We want to know!

I’ll second Far Cry 2. It has a multiplayer only map editor that’s a breeze to work with, a single player editor would be amazing.
Dark Messiah of Might & Magic. Single Player.
Cause choppin’ orcs and throwin’ shovels at guards in that game almost never gets old but one gets a bit tired of reloadin’ the level over and over again to chop and throw some more.
Haha aluslaw, I’d second that, the first part of DMoMM singleplayer was the best, fighting the guards, using every trick at your disposal.
Later parts just weren’t as great as those first game area’s *sigh*, the multiplayer was horrible too…
I was sad that there weren’t any real mods for it like with hl2.
GTA IV, cause it tried to block modding and i NEED the kind of rp-survival zombie mod that could be made
What in the fuckle? Another thread where Far Cry 2 and Mirror’s Edge, two grossly disappointing fuckups, are lauded?
My confusion reigns eternal where those two are concerned. They were just such awful games in so many ways, yet so popular.. Not to mention that they were both broken o.O
Anyway, topic at hand..
Sacrifice. Infinite potential, and still one of the finest multiplayer experiences available, but no-one is playing. If something had kept it alive..
But other than that I really can’t think of anything. The best games are so often heavily modded. STALKER, the Total War games, even Fallout has been modded, and system shock 2.
Just Cause 2. Imagine what you could do with that engine. It’d be perfect for a truly massive RPG, and a great place to adventure in, seeing as the general rule of the engine is “if you can see it, you can go there”. Imagine all 400 square miles of Panau filled with quests and NPCs…
I’m pretty sure Avalanche said they wouldn’t release an SDK for it, so our only chance of seeing this happen would be if they licensed the engine to another developer.
Red Faction: Guerrilla. Fully destructible buildings are a game mechanic SCREAMING OUT for a clever modder to take advantage of. I don’t know what barriers to modding were present, but in an ideal universe, Guerrilla mods would have been sweet.
Just Cause 2 multiplayer Co-Op.
@Jakkar, they’re not saying that Far Cry 2 and Mirror’s Edge are good, they’re saying that they had potential that could have supported some great mods.
Dead Space. I really liked the whole chopping off limbs combat, but you could make a completely different game by reusing the assets in that game.
Take out the zombalikes and put in a dialogue system and you could make groovy little RPG, perhaps even combat free. Focus it on exploration and conversation.
It’s odd how many games either block modding (Empire Total War), or support it very poorly (almost every game out there not made by Valve). After all, the behemoth that is Valve largely got that way on the back of a mod (CS). But that was an inevitable result of their policy of making HL mod friendly.
